Dig Deeper:

My parents taught me, ‘Treat others as you wish to be treated.’ I’ve come back to their lesson over and over when working with leaders at the top of their fields — in business and government, on six continents. It means asking simple questions. Are we listening? Are we hearing? Can we make complex things clear? Are we treating people with respect? When we’re wrong, do we change? Answer Yes —and big things can happen.

When I worked for a mayor, Fodor’s wrote, ‘When you weren’t looking, the city got cool.’ The Washington Post called another client a leader ‘of lasting consequence,’ and the New York Times called him ‘the most racially progressive leader in the state’s history.’ I’m proud of that.

I like working around smart, charismatic people who take on tough challenges — then share the credit so their team shines. Let’s get to work.
