Director, Strategy (Economic Development)

The Opportunity

The Director, Strategy (Economic Development) plays a critical role at S.I.R., leading and supporting complex client engagements and contributing to the growth of the firm’s economic development practice. This position reports to a Managing Partner and works

closely with cross-functional teams. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional (10–12 years of experience) with a strong background in economic development or public-sector strategy who enjoys leading projects, partnering on teams, and working directly with clients to deliver actionable insights and strategies.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Client Strategy and Project Leadership

Lead and manage strategic planning, research, and implementation projects, particularly those focused on economic development and community strategy.

• Serve as the day-to-day client lead, ensuring strong relationships, clear communication, and high client satisfaction.

• Translate qualitative and quantitative research into clear, actionable strategies and recommendations.

• Lead client presentations, workshops, and stakeholder sessions.

Economic Development & Sector Expertise

• Apply practical knowledge of economic development, workforce, industry recruitment and retention, regional collaboration, and community planning to client work.

• Support the development of tools, frameworks, and approaches that strengthen S.I.R.’s economic development offerings.

Business Development Support

• Support proposal development, scoping, and pricing efforts.

• Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and support sector growth.

Leadership and Team Development

• Provide day-to-day leadership, mentorship, and guidance to Managers, Senior Managers, and Analysts.

• Review team work to ensure clarity, quality, and strategic alignment.

Firm-wide Contribution

• Contribute to internal initiatives, process improvement, and knowledge sharing.

• Participate in thought leadership activities, including presentations, white papers, and conference participation.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in public policy, planning, economics, business, or a related field.

• 10–12 years of experience in economic development, consulting, public-sector strategy, community development, or a related discipline.

• Demonstrated experience leading complex projects and managing client relationships.

Key Competencies

Strong strategic and analytical thinking skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to synthesize data into practical, actionable insights.

• Self-starter with a proactive mindset; able to anticipate needs, take initiative, and operate independently without reliance on constant direction.

• Collaborative leadership style with the ability to guide and support teams.

• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office tools; familiarity with AI tools is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

• Competitive salary commensurate with experience (range $80,000-$110,000).
