All about that (alumni) base

Virginia Commonwealth University’s impressive strategic planning initiatives, recruitment efforts and capital improvements over the past three decades all point to one goal: to grow into one of the nation’s premier public research universities.

To get there, it knew it needed to better engage its growing alumni base, and to do that, it needed SIR’s guidance. We started by examining best alumni engagement and affinity practices and auditing all of its alumni communications. Then we conducted extensive interviews and a robust alumni survey to gain of better understanding of their wants and needs.

The best news for VCU was that many of its alumni expressed a desire to be more engaged with the university than they currently were. They just weren’t sure how to do it. So, with our findings as a foundation, we crafted a strategic plan to better inform, engage and reward alumni, while also tracking engagement progress over time.

As VCU wraps up the final phase of the largest campaign in its history, its Office of Development and Alumni Relations has put much of SIR’s strategic planning recommendations into practice, spurring donations, increasing its reach, and welcoming more alumni into the fold of a university rapidly expanding both its footprint and its prestige
